Sonata #1 for piano solo was composed in 2004 during the author's studies at St. Petersburg Conservatory. The one-movement composition is notable for its brightness, colorfulness, and impact. The sonata is saturated with forbidding tempos and technical passages that require an exceptionally high level of performance skill. There are also wide and dense chords, the performance of which is complicated by the fact that they are played non arpeggiato. A. Anuchin has performed the sonata numerous times in St. Petersburg at various recitals and music festivals such as «White Nights» and «Sound Paths». The composition has won prizes several times at various international composition competitions: in Greece, Israel and others. The piano texture in the sonata has a wide coverage of the instrument's registers, causing the musical notation to often be written on three or four staffs. The opening section of the sonata is constructed in the upper register and is characterized by the presence of canonic sequences. The second phrase of the introduction is moved a half-tone lower. The first theme contains a resilient rhythmic core and is marked by a strong energy, incorporating jazz elements typical of Latin American music. The second theme is restrained and lyrical in character, whose melodic line is enriched by a great variety of written out ornamentation. This theme gets its development through the variations in which the music texture gradually densifies and the tempo accelerates. The variations move into the development section of the sonata without a clear distinction. Sonata #1 for piano solo can be of useful to professional composers and musicians as well as concert pianists interested in new virtuoso piano repertoire.
