The suite in five movements for piano four hands was composed in summer of 2025. The cycle consists of contrasting, multi-character pieces, most of which employ the elements of minimalist technique. The first movement, “Broken Chimes,” is distinguished by its toccata character, brightness, and bell-like sounding. The piano functions as a percussion instrument. The part of the second performer is dominated by dense chordal texture, reminiscent of the chimes. At this time, the first pianist plays the repeating virtuoso pattern in the upper register. The use of the sustained pedal in this movement gives the music a sonorous sounding. The second miniature of the cycle, “Scalding Drops,” is composed in the ternary form. The first section lasts without pedal with the use of staccato. The middle part of the composition has a dense chordal texture that is characterized by impact and sharpness. The reprise section in the piece is shortened. The third movement, “Ghost City,” is lyrical. It is distinguished by its calm character and a moderate pace. In the upper register, there is an ostinato rhythmic figuration, and the second performer has the melodic line of wide breathing, built on long notes. The music of the fourth piece, “A Walk Around Pitch Lake,” is distinguished by its calm and measured nature and is built on combinations of four chordal consonances, which gives the composition a meditative and jellified character. The final movement of the suite “Snowboard Turns” is characterized by rapid motion, energy, virtuosity and motoric skills. The music material is presented in quintuplets and doubled in octaves, which gives it additional density and amplification. The piece is composed in the ternary form and sounds with no pedal. The suite in five movements for piano four hands can be useful to professional composers and musicians, as well as pianists interested in new contemporary and virtuosic repertoire.
