«Music of Small Drifting Ice Floes» for two flutes piccolo was composed in the summer of 2013. The composition is characterized by an unusual choice of instruments, as flute piccolo is used quite rarely. And there are as many as two of them represented here. The piece is entirely based on the technique of minimalism, which is typical of A. Anuchin's composing style. There is also polytonality in some harmonic moments. The cold timbre of the instruments in high register combined with the rhythmic shift of one sixteenth note of the second piccolo flute relative to the first one creates the effect of ice swaying on water. This shift results a sense of maximum legato and sound fusion. However, it is also an undoubtedly difficult performance in ensemble terms. «Music of Small Drifting Ice Floes» for two flutes piccolo may be useful to professional composers as well as contemporary ensembles interested in new music repertoire.
