The cycle “Eleven Bagatelles” for harpsichord solo was completed in December 2024. It consists of eleven contrasting, multi-character miniatures, most of which contain the elements of the minimalist technique common to A. Anuchin's compositional style. In the first bagatelle the music material is based on the repeating pattern in the right hand going in the ascending motion, while in the second piece the motion of the melodic line is directed from the top to bottom (as a retrograde), thus both miniatures are combined into one unit. The third bagatelle sounds in the tempo of ragtime. Its texture contains jazz elements with a leaping motion that alternates with virtuosic, chromaticism-rich passages in the right hand. At the beginning of the fourth miniature, the music material is presented in two voices, at times duplicated in octave, and then there is a rhythmic shift resulting in new interval formations. The fifth bagatelle has a march-like character and is built on a dissonant chordal texture set out in staccato. The sixth bagatelle applies juxtapositions of different keys, and also it has a melodic phrase going in ascending motion and alternation with its retrograde version. The dance-like seventh piece combines pointillism with a very challenging polyrhythm to perform. The eighth bagatelle is a miniature of a toccata character, which is characterized by an unusual notation with an absence of a time signature. The ninth bagatelle is marked by virtuosity and technical complexity, which comes from the combination of martellato and hand crossing. In the penultimate miniature, the pattern in upward motion is developed using canonic imitations. The last bagatelle of the cycle is remarkable for its energy and percussiveness, which arises from the multi-sounding chords. The cycle “Eleven Bagatelles” for harpsichord solo can be useful to professional composers and musicians interested in new contemporary repertoire.
